SurePulse was born out of a collaboration between the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Academic Child Health at the University of Nottingham, after researchers realised that vital sign technology being developed within the University could be applied to monitor newborn babies who need help at birth. Current approaches are insufficiently accurate, reliable or timely which can lead to deviations from International protocols for delivery room care, which in turn can lead to sub-optimal outcomes (like neurodevelopmental issues) for the baby.

Existing vital sign monitoring techniques and technologies are not suitable for newborn babies due to ergonomic and physiological factors and have been adapted from devices originally designed for use in adults or children. SurePulse have put babies, parents, and clinical staff at the heart of design by involving them at every step in design and development.

The company is a spin-out of the University of Nottingham and a joint venture with the Simpatica Group Ltd. This collaboration combines the academic strength of the University with the commercial and manufacturing capabilities of one of the UK’s premier contract manufacturers, and was recognised in June 2022 with a 'Highly Commended' Medilink UK MedTech Award in the 'Partnership between Academia and Business' category.

The SurePulse Board of Directors and Management Team are hugely experienced in MedTech design, development, commercialisation, investor relations, and strategic alignment. The success of the first product to be developed and launched, the SurePulse VS wireless heart rate monitor for newborn babies, achieved CE regulatory approval in 2019 and US FDA 510(k) clearance in 2021.

Our vision is to give clinicians and healthcare providers the tools to provide optimal newborn care, improving the life chances for premature and sick babies.
