ZedScan is the first major innovation in the field of colposcopy for 90 years. The device is used as an adjunct to traditional colposcopy and enables the identification of normal, cancerous and pre-cancerous cells with the use of EIS.
The current method is very subjective as it relies on human interpretation of the degree of aceto-whitening. This can result in cancers developing that could have been prevented, unnecessary biopsies, unnecessary follow-ups and patient anxiety. It increases the cost and resource required to run an effective colposcopy service and the growth of the undetected cancers places a significant burden on the healthcare system and reduces positive patient outcomes.
A ZedScan examination is undertaken at the same time as conventional colposcopy and the results generated are used in conjunction with the visual diagnosis to decide on the best course of action for each patient. Use of the device is proven to increase the detection of cancers and pre-cancer, reduce unnecessary biopsies and follow-ups and reduce the costs of running colposcopy clinics.
The ZedScan device is currently helping clinicians across 13 NHS hospitals better manage their patients. Recent real-world data shows ZedScan helping to increase detection of high-grade disease, especially in women with low grade or cytology-negative screening results, and also providing confidence for clinicians to return women with no disease to routine surveillance.
