CLOSED SESSION - Transforming Mental Health care for the 1 billion

Overview

A closed meeting with a max of 16 high-level participants to discuss the innovative approaches to tackling mental health, which is a global issue. The title reflects the WHO's estimate of the number of people living with mental health problems globally. This fishbowl discussion will be the opportunity for key stakeholders from both the UK and the Middle East to raise awareness of the current key challenges and the opportunity to share cutting-edge solutions. It will also showcase the NHS as the flagship and strongest brand of UK.

Speakers: 

Dr. Jennifer KilcoyneClinical Director for Centre for Perfect Care, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust in the UK and Director for the National HOPE(S) NHS England Collaborative.

As Clinical Director, Jennifer is responsible for providing clinical leadership to services across the Trust to enable them to deliver innovative, efficient, quality improvement priorities which result in enhanced safety and impactful healthcare solutions. These programmes of work have resulted in a number of national awards for outstanding practice. Jennifer was also the clinical lead in the Trusts Global Digital Exemplar programme to deliver clinically formulated and leading-edge digital solutions to address challenges in health care and support population health.

As Director of the National HOPE(S) Programme, she has been commissioned to deliver systemic cultural change to mental health and learning disability services across England. Jennifer has implemented country wide training and healthcare improvement programmes with the World Health Organisation across Europe and Africa to support mental health and community transformation. Jennifer is a strong advocate for person centred approaches, reducing restrictive practice, promoting digital solutions to prevention, and working in partnership with people with lived experience to achieve effective and personalised outcomes.

Dr. Sara Al Dallal, World TradPresident / Senior Health Service Advisore, Emirates Health Economics Society / Dubai Health Authority

Dr. Sara Al Dallal, the president of the Emirates Medical Association’s Emirates health Economics Society and a senior health service specialist in Dubai Health Authority. Dr Sara is a Medical Doctor graduated from the UAE University College of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed her internal medicine residency in Dubai Health Authority and holds a Masters in Health Care Management from Royal Colleges of Surgeons Ireland and Masters in Health Economics and policy from London School of Economics.

Dr. Sean Cross, Consultant in Liason Psychiatry, Maudsley and King’s College Hospitals

Consultant in liaison psychiatry at Maudsley and King’s College Hospitals with interests in self-harm, suicide prevention, mental health crisis management and the overlap between physical health and mental health difficulties.

Built series of successful innovative teams (currently 110+ people) focussed on training and integrating services with full list of grants and income available.
Run research projects on service development around mental and physical healthcare and on medical education. Write on a number of topics, including self-harm, medical education and cross-cultural mental health. Full list of all publications is available.
Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. Teach at a variety of institutions. Past winner national Psychiatric Trainer of the Year (RCPsych). Teams have won variety of awards including national training teams of year (Maudsley Simulation, BMJ).

Professor Subodh Dave, Dean / Consultant, Royal College of Psychiatrists / Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust

Professor Subodh Dave is the Dean for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a consultant for Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. He is passionate about co-production and patient involvement in Quality Improvement, and has lead work within psychiatry education to that effect. He has held a range of Medical Education posts and has assisted with the psychiatric curriculum both nationally and internationally.
He is a keen runner and champion of well-being services for doctors and other healthcare workers. He serves on various committees, driving representation and improvement for differential attainment, social justice in medical curricula, and equality and diversity.

Adam Pryce, Director Of Business Development, The Royal College of Psychiatrists

Adam has worked in a variety of roles in the UK mental health space for over 13 years covering the private sector and two NHS Foundation Trusts. As a commercial specialist within mental health, he possesses a wealth of experience in delivering transformative programmes in areas such as addictions, forensics, eating disorders, perinatal and child and adolescent mental health services. He joined the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2022 following a long period at The Maudsley where he was heavily involved in Maudsley Health’s expansion to Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital and advising the National Rehabilitation Center on forensic mental health care.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor, West Yorkshire

Tracy Brabin is a British Labour and Co-operative politician who was elected as the first Mayor of West Yorkshire, and the first ever woman Metro Mayor in England, in May 2021.

During her campaign, Tracy pledged to create 1,000 skilled jobs for young people, lead a ‘Creative New Deal’ for the region, bring buses back under public control, tackle the climate emergency and build 5,000 affordable and sustainable homes.

As Mayor, Tracy also inherits the roles and responsibilities of the former Police and Crime Commissioner. Her priorities for policing include to recruit more frontline officers and staff and to prioritise the safety of women and girls.

Prior to her election as Mayor, Tracy was the Member of Parliament for Batley and Spen from 2016 until 2021. As MP, she held appointments as Shadow Early Years Minister, Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and Shadow Minister for Cultural Industries.

Moreover, Tracy is a former member of the Women and Equalities Select Committee and a former chair of the Gaps in Support All-Party Parliamentary Group, having led the campaign on behalf of the three million people excluded from Government financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born in Batley, Tracy was an actor and screenwriter prior to entering politics, appearing in several British soap operas, and writing for several television series. Tracy now lives in Kirklees, West Yorkshire. She has a husband and two daughters, all of whom work in the creative industries.

Scott Armstrong, Campaigning Editor in Chief, Mentl

Scott Armstrong is a highly connected, award-winning campaigning Editor in Chief & passionate mental health advocate. Scott brings more than three decades of content creation, engaging audiences and building communities to his vision - Mentl.
This new platform is determined to tackle the stigma of mental health head on, through the power of inspiring content and trusted though leadership. His enviable regional network is built on more than a decade in the Gulf, spanning the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. An award-winning journalist and communications strategist, public speaker and moderator, Scott has more than three decades as a storyteller, heading up titles such as Arabian Business and Times of Oman as Editor in Chief, as well as holding leadership roles at the UAE’s The National plus a host of UK titles – and even The Bahamas.

A campaigning journalist throughout his career, highlights include changing the UK law to protect children from kidnappers & honoured by Prime Minister Tony Blair for his job creation campaign. Skilled at uniting private and public sectors around causes, he is a passionate mental health advocate, with a network of experts regionally and internationally.

Jo Fletcher, Managing Director, Maudsley Health UAE

Jo joined South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in 2001, originally undertaking a general management role with the renowned National and Specialist child and adolescent mental health services in partnership with Professor Eric Taylor. Jo then took up the Deputy Service Director role and in 2013 became Service Director of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Clinical Academic Group (CAG). During Jo’s time at the Maudsley she led on numerous service changes and developments and saw a number of the CAMHS staff and services receive national and international awards recognizing innovation, development and quality. Jo managerially led on the development and implementation of SLaM services in the UAE, working closely with MACANI and is now the Managing Director for Maudsley Health, having relocated to the UAE in March 2018 when Maudsley Health successfully bid to work with Emirates Health Services to develop the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital in Dubai.

Jo has a strong interest in the development of services and has provided consultation to the development and management of adult and child mental health services, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Prior to joining the Maudsley, Jo was responsible for a national pediatric service for complex physical disabilities for children and young people and also managed CAMHS community Services. Originally Jo’s career began in Barclays Bank. Jo is a relative of Aneurin Bevan who is considered to have been the architect of the National Health Service.

Dr Nahida Nayaz Ahmed, Consultant Psychiatrist, SEHA

Dr Nahida Nayaz Ahmed is a Consultant Psychiatrist from Abu Dhabi, UAE. She is the Chair of the department at Ambulatory health Services & Chair of Behavioural Health council at Abu Dhabi Health Services Co. She is also the Chair of the Mental Health task force under the Department of Health. Dr Ahmed trained at Tufts University-affiliated St Elizabeth Medical Centre for Residency, and Harvard University-affiliated, Cambridge Health Alliance for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr Ahmed has earned the title of Certified Physician Executive and has made a mark as an emerging leader.

She is a staunch advocate for integrating psychiatry in community-based clinics and using digital platforms for service delivery. She spearheaded a pilot in telepsychiatry to serve remote areas of the UAE. She has advocated for employees’ mental health access, primarily through COVID. She helped establish a helpline for SEHA employees’ psychological support and has contributed to various mental health initiatives working closely with the Department of Community Development and Abu Dhabi Public Health. She oversees the implementation of the Mental health Model of care as the lead at DOH. Dr Ahmed has been active in teaching psychiatry residents, family medicine residents, and medical students, where she also mentors’ young physicians. She is an adjunct associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University, and an Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer at Khalifa University.

Dr Ahmed brings her passion for psychiatry and mental health reforms in all her talks and is a notable speaker in the region. She is an avid reader, travel enthusiast, mother to three exceptional children, and spouse to a distinguished Emirati Transplant Nephrologist, Dr. Mohamed Alseiari.

Dr Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist, Founder and Managing Director, The Lighthouse Arabia

Dr Saliha Afridi is a clinical psychologist and the founder and Managing Director of The LightHouse Arabia, a community wellness center in Dubai. Dr Afridi earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and her master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Arizona School of Professional Psychology in Phoenix, Arizona. She has expertise in topics related to child
and adolescent mental health and parenting, as well a deep expertise in adult mental health and wellbeing especially as it relates to work-life stressors, burnout, and self-awareness.

Dr Afridi moved to the UAE from the United States in 2008 to make a positive impact on the mental health of the region. She established The LightHouse Arabia in 2011, which is now one of the largest mental health centers in the UAE. Her mission was to make mental health services accessible to the UAE community. Since its founding, Dr Afridi and her team have contributed thousands of hours to the community, free of charge, to educate and raise awareness on best practices for mental health and wellness. Her most recent achievement was bringing the internationally acclaimed Australian Mental Health First Aid to the UAE, where her team has trained over 3,000 mental health first aiders for early detection and treatment of mental health conditions within their communities.

Dr Afridi is recognized and applauded for her efforts in furthering the conversation around mental health in the region. She was selected as a thought leader on social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram, and is a frequent guest expert on radio, podcasts, and in print media, as well as has a monthly column in several publications. She is also the co-creator of the SmartHeart Board Game, leading the way in fostering emotional intelligence in children.

Dr Afridi spends extensive time public speaking and consulting with private sector companies and government organizations on programs related to mental health and wellness.
