Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections globally, affecting more than 40% of women and causing over 5,000 deaths a year in the UK alone. Despite this, we lack good timely diagnostic tools and over and under diagnosis of UTIs is common. This exacerbates the spread of antibiotic resistance and causes increased morbidity and mortality and an increase burden on
healthcare services (UTIs are a leading cause of hospitalisation and sepsis in the elderly).
Llusern Scientific have developed a UTI test which is easy to use, quick and accurate. Our test will tell the clinician which uropathogen is causing a UTI within 30 minutes allowing them to make evidencebased decisions. This presentation will highlight the issue of UTIs and outline the potential benefits that an accurate point of care test for UTIs would have - for patients and healthcare providers.
Speaker: Dr Emma Hayhurst, CEO, Llusern Scientific
I am a microbiologist with a long standing passion for applied research and improving global health. My background is in academic research, specifically on the topic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It was through this that I became interested in affordable diagnostics. My colleagues and I were funded by the Longitude Prize back in 2016 to develop a point of care test for UTIs - and Llusern Scientific is the result. Llusern's focus is on reducing inequalities in health by widening access to accurate diagnostics. We have developed a molecular diagnostic testing platform suitable for use in any setting
