Benson Viscometers Ltd

About Us

Benson Viscometers is a British company specialising in the design, development and manufacture of high-quality clinical viscometers and blood measuring equipment. At Benson Viscometers we believe in engineering excellence, technical innovation and quality of service.

We are proud that without any exception every member of the Benson Viscometers team personally “cares” about our responsibility to give an accomplished service in every aspect of our operation.

Established in 1999, our family-run company has established itself as the leader in the provision of clinical viscometers throughout the UK, Europe, and the USA.

Following findings that blood viscosity could be an important pointer for identifying the Covid-19 patients who are most at risk and will require intense medical intervention, a plasma viscosity result above an identified "trigger point" is shown to have good correlation with disease progression.

A paper published by Emory University, in the Lancet 25 May 2020 by Cheryl Maier reported a dramatic rise in blood viscosity levels for severe Covid-19 patients. This was linked to patients with severe clotting risks. This led to growing interest particularly in the USA for clinical viscometers manufactured by Benson Viscometers who have supplied the UK NHS for over 20 years. Three of the largest and most respected healthcare providers in the US are among those having already purchased clinical viscometers, which aid detection and diagnosis of many conditions.

In the UK, Addenbrookes Hospital use a Benson Viscometer to explore how best to understand and treat Covid-19. They believe the plasma viscosity test has potential in the diagnostic assessment of patients with suspected Covid-19 and for monitoring disease progression.

'The Halo' in London (one of Europe’s largest pathology laboratories) uses the plasma viscosity test to monitor inflammatory status in certain groups of Covid-19 patients, and is exploring the possibility that high clinical viscosity levels indicate the need for alternative strategies for stroke prevention.

Comparing serum and plasma viscosity tests is being explored by laboratories in the UK and the US.

Having provided the UK NHS with our analysers for over 20 years, now some of the largest and most respected healthcare providers in the US are among those that have purchased our clinical analysers.

We are extremely proud of our ISO 9001:2015 certification and are currently working towards our ISO 13485:2016 accreditation.
