Spotlight on Cleveland Clinic London
The Howard de Walden Estate - landlord to the renowned Harley Street Medical Area - is thrilled to partner with the UK Healthcare Pavilion to showcase its world-class life sciences and healthcare sector on a global stage. The Pavilion features renowned hospitals, consultant clinics and specialists. This week, we speak to Cleveland Clinic London (CCL), the latest location in Cleveland Clinic’s expanding global footprint, based at the heart of London’s world-famous Harley Street Medical Area.
Cleveland Clinic marks its first official entry into the UK healthcare market this year. Can you give us an overview of the centre and what it specialises in?
Cleveland Clinic is one of the world’s top ranked hospitals and our new Outpatient Centre in London marks a major milestone as our first facility to open within the UK. The Outpatient Centre, at 24 Portland Place, opens this year and will be shortly followed by Cleveland Clinic London hospital in 2022, which will focus on exceptional delivery of acute care. We will combine Cleveland Clinic’s doctor-led care model with London’s highly regarded physicians and the latest technology to offer world-class care.
- Can you tell us a bit about the location of the new centre, and what facilities can patients expect to find at Cleveland Clinic London?
Cleveland Clinic London will be a high acuity hospital designed to treat and look after patients with the most complex medical needs. The building - at eight storeys high and covering 324,000-square-feet - is currently under construction at 33 Grosvenor Place, near Buckingham Palace. It will have 184 inpatient beds; eight operating rooms; a full imaging suite; endoscopy and catheterization labs; day case rooms for surgery; and a full neurological suite with rehabilitation.
Whilst all diseases such as urologic disease will be treated, we will focus on digestive disease, heart and vascular disease, orthopaedics, neurologic disease as well as surgical management of cancers. The state-of-the-art operating theatres will further have fully integrated minimally invasive surgery rooms, including the latest Da Vinci robot. Meanwhile, our first Outpatient Centre will offer outpatient appointments and diagnostics, and general practice appointments.
- What would you say are the benefits of being located within the Harley Street Medical Area?
London is a world-recognised centre of clinical excellence and research, and people from all over the world travel here for healthcare. As the latest location in Cleveland Clinic’s expanding global footprint, the HSMA – situated at the heart of London – will allow us to extend our model of care to more patients than ever.
Through collaboration and learning, Cleveland Clinic London will combine the best of Cleveland Clinic with the best of UK healthcare. We also have the privilege of being part of a vibrant hub comprising a number of specialists at the very forefront of their fields, giving us great ground to form new partnerships and be part of an ecosystem dedicated to providing the highest quality patient-centred care.
- What can you tell us about your partnership with The London Clinic?
We have partnered with The London Clinic for the medical management of cancer patients. Our clinical partnership with The London Clinic will facilitate the provision of comprehensive oncology services to patients at our respective facilities. Surgical oncology will be a core service offered by Cleveland Clinic London, while The London Clinic and its team of expert oncologists – supported by pathway administrators – will provide oncology services including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- What would you say are the core benefits in facilitating a seamless care pathway for patients?
Our values at Cleveland Clinic London are focused on treating the patient and not just the cancer. Our close partnership will allow cancer patients to receive the best care from two high quality healthcare organisations with a similar not-for-profit ethos. We will have a fully integrated service with The London Clinic with a multidisciplinary team approach to give patients the best options in the management of their cancer.
What is really important is that every patient will move seamlessly between the two hospitals. We plan a smooth pathway from the moment the patient is referred through diagnosis, assessment, staging and treatment. This will be ensured by the teamwork of our physicians and surgeons linked to the team of oncologists at the London Clinic, helping us to get the best possible outcomes for our patients, with minimal disruption to their daily lives.
