Across the world, an ageing population combined with the rising number of orthopaedic procedures are propelling the growth of the surgical power tools market.
Meanwhile technological advancement is driving demand for modern, simplified approaches, in areas such as batteries and ergonomics. Power tools – the backbone of modern orthopaedic surgical procedures – have come a long way in the past few decades.
With technological innovation at the core of their business, UK-based manufacturer De Soutter Medical are helping to produce advanced surgical cutting solutions for a rapidly changing global healthcare market – making it easier and more practical for surgeons to drill, saw and dissect bone.
Dave Newman, International Sales Director, explains: “De Soutter Medical specialise in the manufacture and worldwide distribution of high performance powered instruments for surgical procedures.”
“We strive to offer our customers a comprehensive range of quality products. Through continuous product research and development, we are developing new technologies and expanding our intellectual property portfolio. This ensures that we remain at the cutting edge of the medical power tool market, where can continue to respond directly to our customers’ needs.”
Founded in 1990, De Soutter Medical is a leading European manufacturer of surgical power tools.
The Desoutter family have a long history in medical engineering. Following his brother’s tragic flight accident in 1913, founder Charles Desoutter used his experience as a model maker to design and make the world's first lightweight articulated duralumin leg.
Shortly afterwards – at the outbreak of WWI, with demand for artificial limbs increasing – Desoutter Bros was established in London, specialising in the manufacture of lightweight limbs.
The company’s medical heritage was maintained with the launch of its first surgical tool - the M8B bone drill. Charles’ son, Roger Desoutter, was appointed Managing Director of Desoutter Bros – and under his astute management, the business grew into an international market leader.
Growth and development
Over the next decades, the company continued to expand and develop industrial power tools and automation systems, becoming an industry standard for the automotive, aerospace and white goods industries; whilst incorporating a medical division, Desoutter ltd, to continue developing their powered surgical instrument ranges.
In 1990, the family relinquished their interests in industrial tooling choosing to focus solely on the design and manufacture of high-quality cutting edge powered surgical instruments. The company remains in private ownership.
Today, De Soutter Medical has some of the finest engineering facilities, producing a range of over 800 products. They are now successfully celebrating their thirtieth year of supplying high quality medical equipment as an independent company.
All products produced by the Buckinghamshire-based company are designed and developed in-house by a team of world class specialist engineers using state of the art machining.
Dave adds: “Today De Soutter Medical is renowned for producing first-class, cost effective surgical power tools. We have developed close relationships with leading surgeons and clinical staff over many years, throughout the UK and overseas. This has provided a valuable insight into surgical practices and enabled our design team to test and develop innovative solutions to problems in the operating room.”
The De Soutter Medical product range is focused on the orthopaedics and trauma marketplace, for both large and small bone surgery. The company also provides powered surgical instrument solutions for maxillo-facial, oral, ENT, cardiothoracic, neuro, spinal and plastics procedures. Their surgical range includes both modular and dedicated instruments, with a choice of battery, electric or pneumatic power options.
Focused on research and development, De Soutter Medical has established direct sales organisations in the UK, Austria, Australia, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Germany and Italy. More recently, the company opened a US sales office in North Carolina.
They have an ever-growing network of specialist distribution partners, which currently extends to more than sixty countries.
