Two Harley Street based Specialist Sports Physiotherapists have received global praise for their research into ACL injuries at this year’s Isokinetic Football Conference. Selected from hundreds of case reports during the conference, the two presentations were judged to be outstanding by a panel of the world’s most influential sports medicine doctors.
Physiotherapist Alessandro Compagnin, of Isokinetic London, was awarded first place for his research paper: Return to play after multiple, bilateral ACL injuries and reconstructions
Physiotherapist Filippo Picinini, also of Isokinetic London, was awarded third place for his research paper: Spontaneous Healing of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament: Myth of Reality?
Alessandro Compagnin's award-winning research paper, "Return to play after multiple, bilateral ACL injuries and reconstructions," explores the challenges and outcomes of athletes returning to sports after suffering multiple anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and undergoing bilateral reconstructions. The study highlights the intricate rehabilitation processes required for athletes to regain sufficient knee strength, stability, and functional performance. Compagnin emphasizes the importance of comprehensive strength assessments, functional tests, and psychological readiness evaluations to ensure a safe and effective return to play. This research contributes to improving rehabilitation strategies and protocols for athletes with complex ACL injury histories
Physiotherapist Filippo Picinini's research paper, "Spontaneous Healing of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament: Myth or Reality?" explores the potential for ACL injuries to heal without surgical intervention. The study involved clinical and MRI assessments of patients with complete ACL ruptures who underwent conservative treatment. Results indicated that a subset of these patients experienced spontaneous healing, demonstrated by restored ligament continuity on MRI and favorable clinical outcomes. The research challenges the prevailing belief that ACL ruptures cannot heal naturally, suggesting that non-surgical management may be viable for some individuals
